What Is Meningococcal B Disease?
Meningococcal B disease is caused by a type of bacteria called Neisseria meningitidis group B. Although uncommon, it can cause two serious illnesses: Meningitis – inflammation of the protective lining surrounding the brain and spinal cord. Septicaemia – a severe bloodstream infection. The illness can progress incredibly quickly—sometimes within just a few hours—and can affect otherwise healthy young adults. Even with urgent medical treatment, meningococcal disease can sometimes result in: * Hearing loss * Brain injury * Limb damage * Long-term disability * In rare cases, death Vaccination remains the most effective way to protect yourself.
Why Are University Students More at Risk?
For many students, university means living away from home for the first time. You'll likely be: * Living in halls of residence. * Sharing kitchens and bathrooms. *Meeting hundreds of new people. *Attending social events and Freshers' Week. *Spending more time in close contact with others. Meningococcal bacteria spread through close, prolonged contact such as coughing, sneezing, kissing or sharing drinks and utensils. Many people carry the bacteria without knowing it and never become ill themselves, but they can still pass it to others. Because students often live, study and socialise closely together, the risk of transmission is higher than in the general population. Getting vaccinated before you arrive on campus gives you valuable protection when you'll need it most.
