What Is Meningococcal B Disease?
Meningococcal B disease is a rare but serious bacterial infection that can cause:
Meningitis – inflammation of the lining around the brain and spinal cord.
Septicaemia – a severe blood infection.
Although uncommon, the illness can develop extremely quickly, sometimes within just a few hours. Even healthy young people can become seriously ill, and in some cases the disease can lead to life-changing complications such as hearing loss, brain injury, limb damage or even death.
The good news is that vaccination provides effective protection against one of the most common strains responsible for meningococcal disease in the UK.
Why Is This Vaccine So Important for Students?
Starting university is one of life's biggest adventures.
It's a chance to make new friends, live independently and enjoy new experiences. However, it's also one of the times when the risk of meningococcal disease increases.
Students often:
Live in shared accommodation.
Meet hundreds of new people.
Share kitchens, bathrooms and communal spaces.
Attend social events where close contact is common.
The bacteria that cause meningococcal disease can spread through close, prolonged contact, including coughing, sneezing, kissing or sharing drinks and utensils. Many people carry the bacteria without feeling ill themselves, meaning it can spread without anyone realising.
Getting vaccinated before starting university helps reduce your risk and gives you one less thing to worry about as you settle into student life.
