Does Weight Loss Medication Cause Hair Loss?
One of the most talked-about topics surrounding weight loss medications such as Wegovy® (semaglutide) and Mounjaro® (tirzepatide) is whether they can cause hair loss.
The simple answer is not exactly.
While some people notice that their hair becomes thinner during their weight loss journey, the medication itself is not thought to directly damage hair follicles. Instead, the hair changes are usually linked to the rapid weight loss, reduced calorie intake and nutritional changes that can occur while taking these treatments.
The good news? In most cases, this is temporary, and there are plenty of ways to reduce the risk.
Why Can Hair Become Thinner?
Hair grows in cycles. At any given time:
Around 85-90% of your hair is actively growing.
The remaining hairs are resting before naturally shedding.
When your body experiences a major change—such as illness, surgery, significant stress or rapid weight loss—it may temporarily move more hairs into the resting phase.
This is known as telogen effluvium, a common and usually temporary form of hair thinning.
Rather than losing hair in patches, people often notice:
More hair on their hairbrush
Increased shedding in the shower
Hair feeling thinner overall
A less full ponytail
This usually begins 2-4 months after significant weight loss starts, rather than immediately after beginning the medication.
It's Often the Weight Loss – Not the Medication
GLP-1 medications work by helping you feel fuller for longer, reducing appetite and helping you eat fewer calories.
That's excellent for weight loss—but it also means some people unintentionally eat:
Too little protein
Too few calories
Fewer vitamins and minerals
Your body will always prioritise vital organs over hair growth.
If your nutritional intake is too low, hair becomes one of the first things your body temporarily "puts on hold."
Protein Is One of the Biggest Factors
Hair is made almost entirely from a protein called keratin.
If you aren't eating enough protein, your body has fewer building blocks available to maintain healthy hair growth.
Many people taking weight loss medication discover they are eating much smaller portions, but don't adjust those meals to ensure they're still rich in protein.
Instead of simply eating less, it's important to eat smarter.
Excellent protein sources include:
Chicken
Turkey
Fish
Eggs
Greek yoghurt
Cottage cheese
Lean beef
Tofu
Beans
Lentils
Edamame
Protein-enriched yoghurts
Protein shakes (if recommended)
Many people find a protein shake useful if they struggle to eat enough during the day.
How Much Protein Do You Need?
Everyone's needs are different depending on age, weight and activity level.
As a general guide, many healthcare professionals recommend around:
1.0-1.5 grams of protein per kilogram of your target or ideal body weight each day while losing weight.
For many adults, this means aiming for approximately 80-120 grams of protein daily, although individual requirements vary.
Spreading protein throughout the day is often easier than trying to consume it all in one meal.
Don't Forget Vitamins and Minerals
Healthy hair also depends on getting enough vitamins and minerals.
Important nutrients include:
Iron
Low iron stores can contribute to hair shedding.
Sources include:
Lean red meat
Spinach
Beans
Fortified cereals
Zinc
Supports healthy hair follicles.
Sources include:
Pumpkin seeds
Beef
Seafood
Nuts
Vitamin D
Many people in the UK already have low Vitamin D levels.
It plays an important role in many areas of health, including healthy hair.
Biotin
Biotin is often marketed for hair growth.
However, unless you have a genuine deficiency, there is limited evidence that taking extra biotin significantly improves hair growth. A healthy, balanced diet is usually far more important.
B Vitamins
B vitamins help your body convert food into energy and support healthy cells, including those involved in hair growth.
Hydration Matters Too
Dehydration is another common issue when appetite is reduced.
Aim to drink plenty of water throughout the day.
Good hydration supports:
Healthy skin
Hair quality
Energy levels
General wellbeing
Avoid Losing Weight Too Quickly
Although it can be exciting to see the scales dropping rapidly, steady and sustainable weight loss is generally better for your body.
Losing weight too quickly increases the likelihood of nutritional deficiencies and temporary hair thinning.
Remember:
The goal isn't simply to lose weight.
The goal is to become healthier while preserving muscle, energy and overall wellbeing.
Exercise Helps More Than You Might Think
Resistance exercise such as:
Weight training
Resistance bands
Bodyweight exercises
helps preserve lean muscle while you're losing weight.
Combined with adequate protein intake, this helps your body stay stronger throughout your weight loss journey.
Regular exercise also improves circulation and overall health.
Should You Stop Your Medication?
For most people, no.
If you notice increased hair shedding, it doesn't necessarily mean the medication isn't suitable for you.
Hair thinning is usually temporary and often improves once:
Weight stabilises
Nutrition improves
Your body adjusts
However, if hair loss becomes severe, persistent or is accompanied by other symptoms, it's important to speak to a healthcare professional.
